WomenCrafters History
The organization was started in 2005 by Mrs. Juliet Nsubuga after she suffered the loss of her husband to HIV. On realizing the need for AIDS widows to be self sustaining after the deaths of their husbands, she partnered with others in her situation to make the first batch of crafts which they sold for very meager amounts within the local markets.
As is the case with all other businesses, the beginning was not easy.
The ladies were not aware of the responsibility that it took to have a business as most of them had never worked outside of their homes, having always been dependent on their husbands. None of them had any idea about the time commitment necessary to create beautiful crafts that were not only of high quality, but also market ready.
With time, the women committed to their work, found emotional support in each other, and started using the group meetings as therapy and counseling. Today, WomenCrafters boasts a membership of 70 families with over 250 beneficiaries from the AIDS Project programs.
